A raster is a regular matrix with a specific number of columns and rows. Each matrix entry represents either a scalar or vector value at the corresponding matrix point.

A typical example is a digital image. Each matrix entry represents a so called pixel, the value of which consists of the three color components red, green and blue (RGB).

A raster can be organized as a cell-centric or grid-centric matrix.
